Cambodia Casinos

[ English ]

There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect spot, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of most border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty slots and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive vacation and hotel building that features many comforts accompanying the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
