There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which casino gambling is banned. Eight gambling halls are established in a generally small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income acquired from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and though visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga gambling hall is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel building that features numerous amenities in addition to the gambling hall, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and 88 table games.
